As paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in jail for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead, Steenkamp's father has reportedly said that he and his wife are "satisfied" with the court's verdict.
Judge Thokozile Masipa pronounced her ruling on Tuesday in Pistorius' murder trial. The high-profile seven-month trial finally concluded with Pistorius being jailed for five years for culpable homicide. After 10 months of imprisonment, he will be eligible to apply to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, the judge said.
Even as the prospect of an early release was met with a fierce backlash on social media and amid campaigners against gender violence, Steenkamp's mother, June, said that "it doesn't matter" and that Pistorius is going to pay "something." She added that justice had been served, reported The Guardian.
Pistorius had shot Steenkamp dead on Valentine's Day last year and had maintained that he mistook her for an intruder in his Pretoria home.
