Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday hailed the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss review pleas filed by three of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, and said as an alternate law, rapists should be made to undergo surgery after which they cannot rape anyone in future.

"I am happy with the Supreme Court verdict as it's what I expected. Today's laws have become dangerous for rapists as they know that it can result in getting them death penalty," Swamy told ANI.

"Since a lot of thinking goes into consideration on behalf of the Supreme Court over such cases, I would suggest that there should be an alternative law - to make the rapist undergo surgery after which he cannot rape anyone in future. Also, a cross should be put on his head so that the society knows that he is an animal," Swamy added.

Meanwhile, Minister of State (MoS) for Law and Justice PP Chaudhary also lauded the apex court's verdict and said: "The entire country welcomes the Supreme Court judgement. It will prove as a lesson for people who commit such crimes."

Upholding its earlier order, the Supreme Court earlier in the day dismissed review pleas filed by three of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

The judgment came in response to a review petition filed by three death row convicts - Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, and Pawan Gupta- against the Supreme Court order of May 2017, which said that Nirbhaya's rapists and killers should be hanged.

The verdict came nearly six years after five men and a juvenile raped a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in Delhi.

The girl, who succumbed to her injuries 13 days after the incident, was named Nirbhaya, meaning fearless, by a section of the media.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi, pronounced the verdict after reviewing petitions.
