The Syrian Armed Forces have managed to break through the positions of the ISIS at the main southern entrance to the city of Deir Ez-Zor and join the troops, which were present inside the city, Sputnik International reported.
An operation to clear the area was kicked off earlier in the day.
The Syrian army launched an offensive from the north of the airbase, destroying ISIS' fortifications and equipment.
On Tuesday, the Syrian Armed Forces lifted the blockade in the west of the city paving the way for further advancement to the airbase.
The development comes after another vanguard unit of the Syrian forces with Russian air support broke the siege of the airfield, where 1,000 Syrian troops have been pinned down since January this year, on Saturday.
The Russian Defense Ministry called this breakthrough the biggest victory over the ISIS militants in Syria in three years.
