At least three people died after Border Security Force (BSF) troopers opened fired when they were attacked by cattle smugglers armed with machetes, in the bordering northeastern Tripura state on Friday.
Two others, who were injured in the firing at Chitabari around 200 km south from Tripura capital Agartala, were admitted in Subroom hospital.
The three civilians were killed on the spot were identified as Parakumar Tripura (40), Man Kumar Tripura (30) and Swaralaxmi Tripura (40) and the injured were identified as Sunil Kumar Tripura (47) and Jiban Kumar Tripura (22).
The bodies of the deceased have been kept in the morgue at Subroom hospital for post-mortem.
