The father of Australian tennis ace Bernard Tomic has reportedly been handed an eight-month jail sentence for head-butting his son's French training partner.
According to Sport24, a court sentenced John Tomic, whose official name is Ivica Tomic, for the assault outside a Madrid hotel in May, in which he broke his son's French-Monacan training partner Thomas Drouet's nose and knocked him out.
Even though Tomic had denied the charges in July, claiming he acted in self-defence, but the judge said there was no proof that Drouet had attacked Tomic first.
However, a source said that Tomic will not serve jail time as the sentence is less than two years and he has no previous convictions, adding that if the sentence is confirmed, Tomic will have to only small legal costs.
The report mentioned that Drouet was left in a neck brace with a bandaged nose after the confrontation outside the Madrid hotel, while Bernard Tomic was competiting in the Madrid Masters.
Following the incident, Tomic was banned from attending ATP events including the current US Open, where his son was knocked out in the second round last month, the report added.
