President Donald Trump is "evaluating the situation" on his National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's alleged secret communication with a Russian envoy, said the White House.

According to a statement by White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Monday, "The president is evaluating the situation. He is speaking to Vice-President Pence relative to the conversation he had with General Flynn and also speaking to various other people about what he considers the single most important subject there is: our national security."

Flynn has also been accused of misleading Vice-President Mike Pence.

Spicer's statement came moments after White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway said that Flynn had full confidence of the President.

Flynn, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, had initially denied discussing sanctions with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition. But last week, when reports suggested that sanctions may indeed have been discussed, he conceded that he could not remember with 100 percent certainty. Pence is said to be troubled by the possibility that he was misled, reports the Guardian.

Meanwhile, Moscow spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that Flynn and Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak did not discuss lifting sanctions.
