Trump is 'greatest friend of Jewish people': Pence

US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday (local time) said President Donald Trump is the "greatest friend of Jewish people".

Trump on Monday signed a decree to recognise Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights.

Speaking at an event, Pence said, "Allow me to bring greetings from a friend of mine and someone history has already proven to be the greatest friend of the Jewish people and the state of Israel ever to sit in the Oval Office... President Donald Trump."

While signing the decree, Trump, flanked by Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu, said, "Today, aggressive action by Iran and terrorist groups in southern Syria, including Hezbollah, continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel - very violent attacks," Trump said. "This should have been done numerous presidents ago."

Holan Heights was seized by Israel from Syria during the six days war 1967 and has occupied ever since.

Last year, the US President had recognised the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved the American Embassy there from Tel Aviv.
