Former U.S. attorney Alexander Acosta has been nominated by President Donald Trump as his labor secretary.

The Washington Post quoted Trump as saying in his announcement that Acosta, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Jr., has had a "tremendous career."

Acosta would become the first Hispanic member of Trump's Cabinet if he is confirmed by the Senate as he is born to Cuban American parents.

He is currently dean of the Florida International University College of Law.

Acosta has a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard College and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

He was a senior fellow at the socially conservative Ethics and Public Policy Cente from 1998 to 2000.

He has served as a member of the National Labor Relations Board, appointed by George W. Bush, from 2002 to 2003, where he participated in or authored more than 125 opinions.

Acosta also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division.
