United States President Donald Trump, who is on an official trip to Argentina to attend the G20 summit, reaffirmed that he is committed to holding a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un early next year.
Appreciating Kim's upcoming visit to Seoul, Trump noted that the trip may create new momentum for efforts to denuclearise North Korea and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Meanwhile, Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
While talking about the bilateral meeting, Moon's top press secretary Yoon Young-chan said, "While affirming his commitment to holding a second North Korea-U.S. summit early next year, President Trump asked that South Korea and the U.S. closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearising the Korean Peninsula."
Last month at a press conference, Trump had expressed hope that he would meet Kim early next year. He also said his administration is ready to lift the sanctions on North Korea, but asserted that Pyongyang has to be "responsive" to Washington.
The US President met with the North Korean leader for the first time in Singapore this year, where the two leaders had signed a joint declaration to work towards achieving "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean Peninsula in exchange of Pyongyang's "security guarantees" from Washington.
