United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that he is heading to Florida and will "meet with some of the bravest people."

"I will be leaving for Florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth - but people whose lives have been totally shattered. Am also working with Congress on many fronts," the President tweeted.

According to several media reports, the President's tweet did not elaborate on his plans, but White House officials are working on arranging a meeting with people affected by Wednesday's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Reportedly, Trump was already set to leave on Friday for a weekend at his Palm Beach resort.

On Thursday, Trump issued a proclamation mourning the victims of the deadly shooting at Florida high school, ordering American flags to be flown at half-staff.

The proclamation calls on all United States embassies, public buildings, military facilities, diplomatic sites, naval vessels, consular offices, other facilities abroad, to fly their flags at half-staff through Monday.

President Trump made this announcement during a nationwide address from the White House, in which he described the massacre as a "scene of terrible violence, hatred and evil".

19-year-old Nikolas Cruz gunned down at least 17 people on Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was a former student and was expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons.

Cruz has been booked on 17 counts of premeditated murder.
