Twelve Maoists have surrendered before police in Odisha's Koraput District.

State police said their case is being recommended for rehabilitation under the surrender policy of the Odisha government.

"We welcome them in the mainstream. According to the government's rehabilitation policy package, we will compensate them for surrendering," said Inspector General of Police, South Western Range, Jaswant Kumar Jethwa.

The surrendered Maoists hailed from the state's Narayanpatna area, which has long been regarded as a Maoist stronghold.

With this surrender, as many as 33 Maoists have surrendered in Koraput District since January 2014.

Meanwhile, the police has appealed to all Maoists to shun the path of violence.

"Our anti-Maoist operations are running at the ground level. Our forces are scanning suspected locations on the ground level. In the coming days, strong action will be taken against Maoist leaders," Jethwa said.
