The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN Women, has pulled out of a partnership with Uber which was aimed at encouraging women to sign up as Uber drivers due to controversial app's failure to protect female passengers and drivers.

According to the Express Tribune, Uber's founder and chief executive Travis Kalanick announced the partnership two weeks back saying that they were launching a "shared vision of equality and women's empowerment".

Executive director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka pulled out of the partnership after the deal was criticized by trade unions and women's rights organizations.

Brigitta Paas, vice president of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITWF) said that it was astonishing to find that UN Women is linking to Uber based on the promise of providing million jobs.
