Unrelenting rain cripples normal life in Hyderabad

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Hyderabad last evening, inundating many residential colonies and a maximum of 16.5 centimetres of rainfall was recorded at Qutbullapur area, while heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm occurred at many other localities.

The MeT Office said that this is the highest rainfall recorded during the past five years in less than 12 hours.

Flood-like situation prevailed at several areas including Kukatpally, Malkajgiri due to continuous rainfall throughout the night.

The Hussain Sagar Lake located at the heart of the city reached its full capacity with inflows increasing to more than 5000 cusecs.

The authorities are releasing outflows to the tune of 15000 cusecs to avoid any untoward incident.

Local authorities have sounded a high alert at Alwal, Kukatpally and few other localities as the lakes and Nallas near the areas are catching heavy inflows.

The Municipal authorities have asked people to remain at safe places and not to come on to the roads to avoid traffic jams.

Relief operations are underway in rain-affected colonies in and around Hyderabad city. Emergency teams of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are clearing waterlogged areas to ensure smooth flow of flood water and also vehicular traffic.

Meanwhile, the Ranga Reddy district authorities have declared holiday to all schools due to heavy rains.
