Attempting to garner support of the Sikh community prior to the 2017 assembly polls, Uttar Pradesh Prisons Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia has taken an initiative to woo the members of the community living abroad.
He offered his Lucknow residence to function as an office of the Samajwadi NRI's cell to coordinate with the NRIs.
Units of the Uttar Pradesh NRI Sabha have been constituted in Canada, America, Dubai and England, citing the presence of Sikhs from Uttar Pradesh in these countries.
