A golf course in the United States has reportedly offered an apology for advertising nine holes of golf for 9.11 dollars to mark the 12th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 (9/11) attacks that killed nearly 3 000 people.

The owner of Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Wisconsin also said that he might temporarily close the club following a backlash that included death threats.

According to News24, following the advertisement, news of the special ad flooded the social media and the golf course's Facebook page was overrun with negative comments

However, club owner and general manager Marc Watts said that no disrespect was intended towards the victims of the tragic day, adding that they are hurt on the negative context put on the issue as they believed that people would appreciate the ad.

Watts also said that the promotion began two years ago, on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, and until now was warmly received as a way to ensure that people never forget the tragedy

This is not the first time that promotions tied to 9/11 have drawn criticism, with a US resort drawing criticism last year for offering hotel rooms for 91.11 dollars and a food voucher for 9.11 dollars as a 'Thank You to our heroes', while two years ago, a sports club in the country was criticised for offered 9/11 first-responders cheap memberships, the report added.
