Injured Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is reportedly targeting a comeback to his club for the sensational derby against local and Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

Rooney was out of action after incurring a horrific gash on his forehead during a clash with teammate Phil Jones while training, which required ten stitches and ruled him out of England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

According to the Mirror, although United boss David Moyes had initially ruled out Rooney out for three weeks after United's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on September 1, which would have delayed his recovery timescale until the City clash on September 22, however, Rooney now has a chance of facing City as he is due to resume light training towards the end of the week.

The report further said that Rooney would be considered by Moyes for selection against City if his wound, which is being monitored closely by Moyes' staff, has healed sufficiently for him to head a ball.

However, the report added that Moyes and his staff must decide whether the striker, who has not trained for 10 days, is fit enough to figure even if the cut has healed to enable Rooney to play.
