Wannabe journalist pens horror tale of abduction and rape by Somalia jihadists

A 24-year-old Canadian cocktail waitress quit her job to explore the life of a journalist and following her route through Afghanistan and Iraq in 2008, she was reportedly abducted and raped by jihadists in Somalia before paying off the ransom.

Amanda Lindhout relied on 'TV Reporting for Dummies' to pursue the career of a journalist and asked her Australian ex-boyfriend 36-year-old Nigel Brennan to accompany her to do reporting in Somalia.

It was during their third in Somalia that jihadists abducted them and kept them in confinement for almost 15 months, having failed to provide the ransom amount of 3 million dollars, in which they were subject to all forms of physical and mental torture.

According to New York Post, Lindhout and Brennan during their initial days in captivity tried to escape the brutality of the jihadists by even converting to Islam, yet the militants continued to rape Lindhout and beat Brennan.

The horror tales of the duo continued when they once tried to escape the captivity but was caught by the jihadists and later were subject to more abuse and torture.

Lindhout's family had been in debt from a long time and it was only on the 100th day in captivity that Lindhout was allowed to talk to her mother and ask her to arrange for the ransom and telling her to use the 500,000 dollars that Brennan's family had raised for him to be used for her release.

During their captivity, they received some help from their respective consulates in form of medicines, reading glasses, books and feminine products for Lindhout who was denied sanitary napkins by the jihadists.

The duo's horror finally ended on Nov. 25, 2009 when they were freed in an off-road exchange and returned home and are no longer in talks with each other.

The report said that Lindhout even gave birth to a boy during her capitivity, whom she named Osama and the two return to their changed lives and shared their tales with their memoirs.

Brennan published his memoir, 'Price of a Life' in 2011 while Lindhout's memoir 'A House in the Sky' is out this week.
