Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on Wednesday said that the NCP wants to contest from more number of seats in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls because his party performed better than the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.

"What we do want is that we want to contest from more number of seats this time because our performance during Lok Sabha elections has been better than Congress Party's," Anwar told ANI.

"We wish to contest the assembly elections together and the talks for that are going on. We are going to follow what we had decided back in 1999 that the Chief Minister will be from the larger of the two parties," he added.

Taking a dig at the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance for bickering over seat sharing and the CM's post, Anwar said, "In our alliance there is no tussle for the post of Chief Minister."

The polling for 288 seat Maharashtra state assembly are scheduled to be held on October 15, with the counting of the votes set to take place on October 19.

During last assembly elections in Maharashtra in 2009, the NCP and the Congress Party had won 82 and 62 seats respectively, and formed the government.
