Watson fears Oz opener days 'numbered' following 'disappointing' Ashes series

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has accepted that his days of opening for his country are numbered, and admitted that he had suffered a 'really disappointing' Ashes series.

According to Sport24, Watson has failed to score a 50 so far against England after being moved up the order to open with Chris Rogers and was replaced by David Warner for the second innings in the drawn third test at Old Trafford when England retained the Ashes.

Stating that he is disappointed at his performance at the three Test matches, the former vice captain said that he feels that his days as an opener are coming to an end as even though he loves opening, he has not scored as much runs as needed to be able to continue to feel like he is doing a competent job at the top of the order.

According to Watson, although it is annoying to be unable to capitalise despite getting the starts and things going, he understood the thought process behind his move down to number four, although he added that he is happy to bat anywhere in the end.

The report further said that Watson opened for Australia between 2009 and 2011 but, before this series, had moved up and down the order since returning from injury.

The fourth Test of the five-match series starts in Chester-le-Street in Durham on Friday with England 2-0 up, the report added.
