Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has said that the public should be more surprised that Michael Clarke's sledge at James Anderson went to air rather than the fact he said it.

According to The Age, Waugh believes the fact Clarke's comment was allowed to slip through into the public domain could stop players from both teams trying to get under their opposition's skin with sledging.

Waugh, considered the master of mental disintegration during his reign as skipper, said while the public would have welcomed the fight and spirit displayed by their national team, the players needed to be wary to not cross the line, according to the report.

Clarke had told Anderson to 'get ready for a broken f---ing arm' during their ugly spat in the first Ashes Test at Brisbane.
