WhatsApp will roll out its video calling feature for users all over the world, including India, tonight. Over a billion active users of the messaging service shall now be able to video chat with their loved ones.
Once you click on the calling button on the top right corner of your WhatsApp screen you shall get an option of a voice call and a video call. The voice call option will allow users to make normal voice calls which have already been rolled out.
"Video calling is one of the most requested features from people in India. We're proud to have the opportunity to launch this feature in India, where we now have 160 million users," Jan Koum, CEO and Co-Founder, WhatsApp. With 160 million users, India is the largest user of the messaging service in the world.
WhatsApp claims that any person with a smartphone running on Android, iOS or the Windows platform shall be able to use the video calling feature.
Manpreet Singh, WhatsApp's lead mobile engineer said, "The quality of the video shall be adjusted according to the speed of the net connection of individual owners." This suggests that video calling shall also be possible on a 2G network but Manpreet refused to confirm or deny the same.
All video calls shall be encrypted end to end like the messages we send and multitasking, receiving and replying to text messages, shall be allowed during a video call on WhatsApp.
