Controversial Newcastle United director of football Joe Kinnear made a big mistake when he tried to sign one of his own players, as she spoke to Birmingham officials about midfielder Shane Ferguson.

According to The Daily Express, Kinnear expressed an interest and even went as far as asking whether the Championship club would consider selling the Northern Ireland international, and for how much.

Dumbfounded Birmingham officials, realising that Kinnear wasn't joking, then had to point out that Ferguson was in fact on a season-long loan, from Newcastle, the report said.

Many Newcastle fans were dismayed when Kinnear returned to Tyneside believing he was out of touch, the report added

Kinnear retorted that his football knowledge was second to none and he had a bookful of contacts, who would be beneficial to the club, the report further said.

A Birmingham insider confirmed Kinnear's latest embarrassment and said that Shane Ferguson had a good game the night Joe watched them, and after the match he was over to speak to one of their officials, saying he was interested in signing him.
