The security officials at Spanish border may not have been expecting to see what came through the X-ray scan of a suitcase. A boy stashed inside!
At border of Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Cueta, an X-ray image revealed clearly outlined figure of an 8-year-old boy in a suitcase, which belonged to a 19-year-old woman, the Guardian reported.
The woman, identified as a Moroccan national, was hesitant to pass the fuchsia-coloured wheeled luggage through the security check, and after seeing the boy, Guardia Civil agents immediately arrested her.
The scared boy, who was handed over to Spain's child protection services, told the authorities that his was named Abou and he was from the Ivory Coast, and a spokesperson said that had they not discovered him, it could have "ended tragically."
Two hours from the incident, the officers managed to flag a man, originally from the Ivory Coast and currently a resident of the Canary Islands, when he crossed the same border, who turned out to be the boy's father.
He said that his intention was only to take him to the Canary Islands.
Since the woman wasn't related to the boy, the man could have paid her to smuggle the child into Spain.
Every year, migrants try to cross the border illegally in the hopes for a better life, as a result of which, Spanish authorities have increased their security and look for the most unexpected ways people could try to get in the country.
