Porsche has chalked out its plans cheekily and it is moving ahead with them by introducing a 4-cylinder engine in its exquisite SUV - Macan. Its been almost two decades since any Porsche branded vehicle featured such an engine; prior being the 968 which was phased out back in 1995. There were talks of several developments surfacing like the four-pot Boxster or even a smaller vehicle but if current reports are to be believed then it seems that Porsche has finally zeroed in on the Macan for this initiative.

Porsche Macan crossover was recently unveiled at the LA Motor Show with three different engine options that included two twin-turbocharged V6 engines and a 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine. Both the V6 engines offer a 3.0-litre and a 3.6-litre unit. Having said that, their performance outputs stand at 340 bhp and 400 bhp, respectively. As aforementioned, Porsche will now be looking at a smaller unit to propel this latest crossover.

Speculations are quite rife that Porsche would offer the smaller engines with the entry-level variants of Macan that lies underneath the current Macan S, Macan S Diesel and Macan Turbo. The 4-cylinder engine would be developed in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol one is said to be supplied through 'Volkswagen Parts Bin' while the diesel mill would be deveoped by Porsche on its own. The engines may offer a power up to 280 bhp.

Stakes are a bit low on the base Macan diesel variant as the Macan S diesel is also not providing any great acceleration and speed but it would be interesting to see whether four-cylinder engines will make the transatlantic voyage Stateside or not.
