BMW’s next generation X1, which is set to make its official debut in the coming months, has been spied undisguised in China recently. Shared by an auto portal in China, the image reveals an aggressive new look for the compact crossover and we expect its Indian arrival for the 2016 model year.

Built on the new UKL platform, the new X1 will be going front-wheel drive, while the outgoing model is available either with rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations in different markets across the world.

What we’re looking at, is a sportier evolution of the outgoing X1 model, featuring a relatively larger version of brand’s iconic kidney grille design, complimented well by a new set of L-shaped LED headlamps and chrome-garnished front bumper, sporting two large silver-trimmed ‘intakes’ at the corners. While the rear of the new model appears to be almost identical with no major change visible as such.

Internationally, the engine options on the new X1 will likely be carried over from the company’s 2-Series Active Tourer, including BMW’s B38-series 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel powerplants, all turbocharged. The transmission options will most likely include the six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearbox units. Whereas in India, BMW only sells the 2.0-litre diesel X1, rated at 184 brake horsepower and 380Nm of peak torque. However this time, we expect that the company will introduce the petrol engine as well, though, nothing certain can be said as of now.

Stay tuned to the space for new X1 to debut in the coming months, likely at either the Geneva Motor Show in March or the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
