Maruti Suzuki’s ‘NEXA’ network of premium dealerships will soon be selling the upcoming Ignis hatchback. India’s largest carmaker showcased the Ignis concept at this year’s Auto Expo and test mules have already been spotted. While a lot of details regarding the car remain elusive, it has been learnt that the Ignis will get the option of an automatic gearbox.
Maruti has expanded its range of automatic cars with many new models being offered with an automated manual transmission (AMT). However, while the Alto K10, WagonR, Stingray, Celerio and Dzire diesel get AMTs (auto gearshift/AGS as Maruti terms it), the Ignis is likely to follow in the footsteps of the Baleno and come equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), as per a report by Autocar India.
AMTs are more cost effective to produce, but they’re also relatively jerky during gear changes. Given that the Ignis is a hatchback being sold through the more premium NEXA showroom network, the AGS label may not work well with the model’s upmarket placement.
The Ignis is expected to be offered with familiar engine options viz. a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine. While it will be placed below the Baleno in the brand’s pricing hierarchy, its design will be closely connected to that of the S-Cross, with its tall stance, big wheel arches, body cladding and roof rails imparting the appeal of a compact crossover.
The Ignis is expected to hit NEXA showrooms in the festive season. Expect prices to hover around the Rs 5 lakh mark.
