Volvo has come up with latest display of autonomous car as Concept 26. Known for its constant innovating nature, the Swedish auto manufacturer, this time, has named the vehicle on what comes as the average time for commuter travelling between home and office (26 minutes). The showcasing of car comes at a time when companies all over the world, are trying their best to feed the autonomous technology to the common riders.
According to the automaker, the car has got some of the patent mechanisms and the seat design is such that it holds the occupant in place. Moreover, the car can switch between three modes – Drive, Create or Relax. While the “Drive” mode makes Concept 26 a car with usual cabin, “Create” and “Relax” modes transform it into a more comfortable interior. The steering system gets into the dashboard for these two techniques and a large display appears instead, allowing the occupier to use it for entertainment/work (as per the requirement).

Autonomous system is activated through steering-mounted paddles and as the paddles detect occupant holding them for a specific time, the car is switched to automatic mode. The rider can always communicate with the system and can take over the system whenever required.
Reaffirming that company has only done what people wanted them to do, Chief designer for Volvo interiors, Tisha Johnson, said that they researched what people would want to do in a car, and reconfigured the interior to allow people to do different things behind the wheel. “We have gone to great lengths to understand the challenges and opportunities that autonomous cars will bring to people in coming years, and our flexible approach to engineering and design, enabled by our SPA, means that we can readily bring this from concept to reality”, added Peter Mertens, Volvo’s Vice President of R&D division.
