Cigarette makers tumble on tough provisions of anti-smoking law

Shares of three cigarette makers fell by 1.28% to 3.07% at 11:47 IST on BSE as the government proposed to amend the anti-smoking law.

ITC (down 3.07%), Godfrey Philips India (down 2.86%) and VST Industries (down 1.28%), edged lower.

The S&P BSE Sensex was down 49.26 points, or 0.18% at 27,376.47.

The government on Tuesday, 13 January 2015, proposed to amend the anti-smoking law recommending a ban on sale of loose cigarettes and raising the minimum age for buying tobacco products to 21 years from existing 18.

The government has also proposed raising of fine to Rs 1,000 from Rs 200 on smoking in public places as well as recommending removal of designated smoking zones in hotels and restaurants.

These are some of the major recommendations in the cigarettes and other tobacco products (prohibition of advertisement and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply and distribution) (amendment) bill 2015, which were put out by the health ministry on Tuesday, 13 January 2015, to seek suggestions from the public.
