Delhiites ahead in 'Big Billion Days' sale this festive season: ASSOCHAM

Big Billion Days have started off with a bang, Delhiites recorded 88.5% rise in online trends over the regular online shopping (56%) with available deals online, free shipping, reveals the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) recent paper.

As per the ASSOCHAM recent findings, about 82% of Delhiites have left behind all other cities in big billion days (BBD) sale as the e-tailers are offering mouth-watering discounts. While Mumbaikars (80.5%) ranks second, Ahemdabad (78%) ranks third, Bangalore (75%) ranks fourth and Hyderabad at 72.5% in their preference for online shopping in the survey.

The survey conducted in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The respondents included 350 professionals, officers and executives across various industry sectors including manufacturing, real estate, automobile, healthcare, retail, hospitality etc.

Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru lead in terms of the sales, but there is also a huge surge of interest from tier II and Tier III cities like Pune, Gurgaon, Noida, Chandigarh Nagpur, Indore, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam etc. have increased by 120% year-on-year, points out the paper.

During the Billion Days sale, Mobile phone is the most searched category online followed by apparel, computers & tablets, electronics, home-kitchen appliances, accessories and books, adds the survey.

Nearly 76% of the respondents said, "It is much easier from the comfort of your own desk or even from your smartphone or tablet to type out a search phrase and click "buy" than have to undergo a mall excursion.

As per the survey, majority of the respondents are working and shopping at the same time between 12 noon and 5 pm on a working day. One in five online shoppers now visits a comparison shopping site too before completing a purchase on a seller website, adds the survey.

Nearly 55% respondents said, they ordered around lunch time and during office closing hours. People are done with the day's work use the last hour to browse and buy from shopping sites," points out the survey.

Among the above age segments, 18-25 years of age group has been the fastest growing age segment online with user growth being contributed by both male and female segments. The survey highlights that 35% of regular shoppers are in 18-25 age group, 55% in 26-35, 8% in 36-45 and 2% in the age group of 45-60. 65% of Online Shoppers are male as against 35% female.

Most products bought & sold off through online comprise mobile phones(65%), electronic gadgets (58%), consumer durables (42%), gift articles (41%), accessories (36%), apparel (36%), computer and peripherals (33%), home appliances (16%), toys (16%), beauty products (12%), health and fitness products (12%), apparel gift certificates( 10%) and sporting goods (7%), adds the survey.

ASSOCHAM paper highlighted, in India roughly 40-45% of their total sales are being generated by mobile devices and tablets, increased by 30-35% than the last year and also likely to continue upwards. The big brands are in tie up with popular e-commerce retailers and selling through full page advertisements, internet and television, adds the paper.

Releasing the paper Mr. D S Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM said, India's e-commerce market was worth about $2.5 billion in 2009, it went up to $6.3 billion in 2011 and to $8 billion in 2015 and is expected to touch whopping $56 billion by 2023.

The reasons for online shoppers number multiplying are because of factors such as home delivery which saves time, secondly '24' hours shopping with ease and availability factors for product comparisons.

Most e-commerce companies are targeting 40-50% revenue from mobile sales during the festive season beginning with Navratras, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali and Christmas.
