Kharif crop sowing picks up, crosses 165 lakh hectare

Oilseeds crop sowing jumps to 27.89 lakh hectares

The total kharif crop sown area as on 26 June 2015, as per reports received from states, stood at 165.62 lakh hectare as compared to 134.18 lakh hectare at this time last year. The crops sown area shows a hoping increase of 23.4% over the same time of last year.

It is reported that rice has been sown/transplanted in 23.28 lakh hectares, indicating a decline from 25.04 lakh hectares covered same time a year ago. However, the pulses crop area have jumped to 11.04 lakh hectares from 6.14 lakh hectares same time a year ago. The coarse cereals crop area have also zoomed to 19.28 lakh hectares from 16.74 lakh hectares covered same time a year ago.

Oilseeds crop sowing has shot up to 27.89 lakh hectares compared with the coverage of 5.29 lakh hectares a year ago. The cotton sown area has also jumped to 34.87 lakh hectares from 29.07 lakh hectares a year ago. However, the area under sugarcane at 41.58 lakh hectares and jute & mesta at 7.69 lakh hectares was lower compared with 43.92 lakh hectares and 7.98 lakh hectares a year ago.
