Market breadth turns negative; broader market underperforms

The main indices traded in a range with modest gains in mid morning trade. At 11:24 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 264.77 points or 0.51% at 52,570.97. The Nifty 50 index was up 68.05 points or 0.43% at 15,755.95. The June 2021 F&O contracts will expire today, 24 June 2021.

The broader market underperformed. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.38% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 0.15%.

The market breadth turned negative. On the BSE, 1,405 shares rose and 1,566 shares fell. A total of 140 shares were unchanged.

COVID-19 Update:

Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 179,537,489 with 3,890,422 global deaths.

India reported 627,057active cases of COVID-19 infection and 391,981deaths, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Reliance Industries AGM:

Reliance Industries (RIL) fell 1.24%. RIL will conduct its 44th AGM virtually today, 24 June 2021, at 14:00 IST. The oil-to-telecom conglomerate may make announcements across its telecom, retail and O2C businesses.

Results Today:

ONGC (down 0.41%), Ashok Leyland (up 0.04%), PTC India (down 0.52%), Bodal Chemicals (up 1.08%), Mishra Dhatu Nigam (up 1.84%), Nath Bio-Genes (India) (up 0.97%), Nirlon (up 1.04%), Take Solutions (up 0.43%) and West Coast Paper Mills (up 1.8%) are among companies that will announce their quarterly results today.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty IT index was top gainer on NSE Sectoral indices rising 1.47% to 28,672.65. The index saw bargain hunting after slipping 0.93% in previous trade.

TCS (up 2.26%), Infosys (up 2.12%), Coforge (up 1.32%), Mphasis (up 1.2%) and HCL Tech (Up 0.93%) were top gainers in IT space.

Global Markets:

Asian stocks were mixed on Thursday after U.S. shares moved in narrow ranges as traders digested commentary from Federal Reserve officials on the outlook for stimulus.

In US, the S&P 500 erased modest gains earlier and closed in the red on Wednesday as the market's comeback rally took a breather. The Nasdaq hovered near its all-time high on Wednesday.

Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan, who's penciled in a rate hike next year, said the economy will likely meet the Fed's threshold for tapering asset purchases sooner than people think. His Atlanta counterpart Raphael Bostic said the central bank could decide to slow such purchases in the next few months. Neither are currently voting members of the Fed's rate setting committee.

A measure of U.S. factory activity climbed to a record high in June. Data firm IHS Markit said on Wednesday its flash U.S. manufacturing PMI rose to a reading of 62.6 this month. That was the highest since the survey was expanded to cover all manufacturing industries in October 2009 and followed a final reading of 62.1 in May.

The U.S. current account deficit increased to a 14-year high in the first quarter. The Commerce Department said on Wednesday the current account deficit, which measures the flow of goods, services and investments into and out of the country, rose 11.8% to $195.7 billion last quarter. That was the largest shortfall since the first quarter of 2007.
