Key benchmark indices switched between gains and losses in mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty continued to trade below 12,300 mark. At 14:22 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 36.50 points or 0.09% at 41,710.42. The Nifty 50 index was up 15.20 points or 0.12% at 12,274.90.
The broader market traded with gains. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.29% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.14%.
The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 1228 shares rose and 1151 shares fell. 162 stocks were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 32 stocks advanced while 18 stocks declined.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 0.30% to Rs 533.45. The company's board approved transition of Anand Mahindra's role to non-executive chairman and re-designated Pawan Kumar Goenka as managing director and chief executive officer with effect from April 1, 2020.
Cadila Healthcare rose 2.24% to Rs 267.40. The company in an exchange filing during market hours said that the USFDA inspected the company's topical manufacturing facility located in Ahmedabad from 16 to 20 December 2019. The inspection ended with no Form 483 observations.
Numbers to Track:
The yield on 10-year benchmark federal paper fell to 6.591% at 14:13 IST compared with 6.746% in the previous trading session.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 71.16, compared with its close of 71.03 during the previous trading session.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for February 2020 settlement was up 1 cent at $66.55 a barrel. The contract rose 37 cents or 0.55% to settle at $66.54 a barrel during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 5 February 2019 settlement fell 0.21% to Rs 38,028.
