Shares of six sugar companies rose 3.4% to 9.59% at 14:00 IST on BSE, with the stock extending recent strong gains triggered by hopes shortage in sugar supplies globally to aid domestic sugar prices and help clock modest increase in realisations.
Meanwhile, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 267.81 points or 1.04% at 25,596.66.
Among sugar stocks, Balrampur Chini Mills (up 3.4%), Shree Renuka Sugars (up 3.74%), Rana Sugars (up 6.41%), Simbhaoli Sugar (up 9.59%), Triveni Engineering & Industries (up 4.82%) and Dwarikesh Sugar (up 4.96%) gained. Bajaj Hindusthan (down 2.5%), EID Parry (down 5.3%), and Sakthi Sugar (down 4.19%) declined.
