At least 11 people were killed in a stampede in Jharkhand's Deoghar city early Monday, police said.

"More than one lakh people were in a queue to offer prayers at a temple. All of a sudden some confusion prevailed and stampede took place. At least 11 people were killed and more than 30 have been injured," a police official told IANS.

Deoghar is 300 km from here.

During Shravani month of the Hindi calender, more than 30 lakh people offer prayers at the famous Baidyanath Temple. On Mondays, the number goes up substantially and around 1.5 to two lakh people offer prayers.

According to eyewitnesses, stampede broke out after police resorted to lathi charge to manage the crowd.
