At least 14 militants were killed Monday in a military raid in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

According to officials, the military destroyed 32 terrorist hideouts, including houses and huts used as staging ground for targeting army and police forces, near Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah cities in north Sinai bordering Israel.

A field hospital belonging to the jihadis and a factory for making explosive devices were also destroyed in the raid, Xinhua reported.

In July, over 50 extremists were killed in military raids in response to the killing of police and military officers by gunmen in the region.

Militant attacks, which usually target security personnel, but also led to civilian casualties, have surged since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and the harsh crackdown on his supporters.

The Sinai-based Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group claimed responsibility for most of the attacks against the security personnel.
