At least 29 civilians were killed in clashes between Nyatura militia and National Council for Renewal and Democracy (CNRD) fighters in North Kivu province of DR Congo, the police said on Friday.

The fighters of CNRD, a dissident branch of the Rwandan Hutu rebels of the FDLR, attacked Nyatura militia on Wednesday, thus provoking a fight that resulted in civilian killings, Xinhua news agency reported.

The two militia groups, which have been fighting in this part of the country for several months for ethnic reasons, are headed by former Congolese army (FARDC) deserter officers.
