50,000 tonnes of onions to be imported

The government Friday said that it has floated a tender for import of about 50,000 tonnes of onions.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Lok Sabha that the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Fedration of India Limited (NAFED) has floated the tender.

According to the minister, the total quantity to be imported will depend upon the quantum of requirement of onions received from various states and union territories.

India imported 17,846.88 tonnes of onions valued at Rs.334.08 crore during 2013-14.
