A committee set up by the Jammu and Kashmir government has recommended the withdrawal of 850 cases registered against 4,961 persons accused of involvement in stone pelting incidents in the state, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir told the Lok Sabha, in a written reply, that the Jammu and Kashmir government had set up a committee under the chairmanship of the state Director General of Police to review the cases registered against the stone pelters and examine the legal aspects of withdrawal or closure of such cases which are not heinous in nature.

"The committee has recommended 850 cases involving 4,961 (one-time offenders) persons/youths subject to certain terms and condition to the state government," he saidy.

The Jammu and Kashmir government took the step after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh requested the state Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to quash all the cases against those booked first time for pelting stones on security forces.
