Kerala Assembly Speaker G. Karthikeyan, who is suffering from liver complications, Friday left for the US for treatment.

The speaker was accompanied by his close friend and state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and family members.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, his wife and a few Congress leaders were at the airport here to see him off.

Karthikeyan, a veteran Congress leader, had announced in July that he would step down as speaker on health grounds. But his party intervened and asked him to stay on.
