Controversial legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi was honoured by a Jeddah-based Indian community organisation for his contribution to the country's Muslims, media reported.
Bazm-e-Ittihad, an Indian welfare organisation in Saudi Arabia's coastal city of Jeddah, at a function presided over by its president Ahmad Uddin Owaisi feted the Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittihadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi for his service to Indian Muslims, particularly to the Hyderabadi community, the Saudi Gazette reported Sunday.
Leading Indian community members, including representatives of eminent NRI organisations in Saudi Arabia, were guests at the function.
Mohammed Obaid-ur-Rehman, vice president of Bazm-e-Ittihad, congratulated Owaisi on his recent election to the Telangana assembly.
Owaisi, in his emotional speech, said that it was time for Indian Muslims to unite for justice.
"We are a population of 250 million, but we are not united. If we unite then we can solve our economic and social problems," the report quoted Owaisi as saying.
He stressed that education is important to face challenges that confront the Indian Muslims.
