An Amtrak passenger train derailed and was dangling in Pierce County in Washington leaving several injured, the carrier tweeted.
The Sheriff's office said that there are multiple victims inside the derailed cars; 77 people have been taken to local hospitals, CNN reported.
Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency in Pierce and Thurston counties after the train derailment.
This means that state agencies and departments will be able to tap into state resources in order to "do everything reasonably possible to assist affected political subdivisions in an effort to respond to and recover from the incidents," the governor office was quoted as saying.
