Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel's resignation was "long overdue" and the BJP leadership was protecting her despite "growing unrest and corruption in the state", Congress leader Gurudas Kamat said on Monday.

"Anandiben Patel's resignation was long overdue. BJP leadership tried to protect her for several months in spite of growing unrest amongst Dalit community for the atrocities across Gujarat, the brutal manner of handling the Patidar community and also massive corruption," said Kamat, a party general secretary and state-in-charge.

Kamat also said that "it would be like rubbing salt in their wounds if she is taken in the Union Cabinet or appointed as Governor".

"The Congress party has been agitating for her removal for atrocities against Dalits, brutal behaviour against the Patidar community leaders during their agitation and for massive Corruption," he added.

Patel has called upon the BJP leadership to "relieve" her from her present responsibilities in keeping with the "party's laudable tradition" of leaders who turn 75 vacating their posts.
