The Congress Saturday appointed former minister Anjan Dutta, who was quizzed by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam, as chief of its Assam unit.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has appointed Dutta as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Bhubaneshwar Kalita with immediate effect, a Congress statement said here.

Dutta, an MLA from Assam's Amguri constituency, was grilled by the CBI last month in connection with the multi-crore rupee Saradha scam. The probe agency also searched his residence in Assam.
