Congress MP Ashok Tanwar will be the new president of the party's Haryana unit, the party announced Monday.

The announcement of Tanwar's name was made by Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi here.

Tanwar, who turns 38 Wednesday (Feb 12), has been national president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) from 2005 to 2010.

Considered close to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Tanwar replaces Phool Chand Mullana, 73, who has held the post since July 2007.

Mullana is considered close to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and was able to retain his post despite losing in the October 2009 assembly polls.

Tanwar was elected from the Sirsa (reserved) Lok Sabha seat in Haryana in the 2009 general elections. He defeated his nearest rival by over 300,000 votes.

Sirsa is the home district of opposition leader and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Om Prakash Chautala.
