La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have extended the contract of their Spain Under-21 international midfielder Saul Niguez until the end of June 2020, the club has confirmed.
The move sees the club assure the future of one of its most promising young players. Saul was on loan at Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano last season and played the majority of the campaign in central defence, reports Xinhua.
However, on returning to the Vicente Calderon Stadium for the start of the current campaign, Saul has found himself returning to his preferred central midfield role, making 32 appearances in all competitions this season while scoring 4 goals.
"Saul has grown up in our youth system ever since he was a cadet and he has made his way to the first team squad and consolidated his place in the squad," an Atletico official said on Tuesday.
The club also highlight that Saul "is a member in the Spain Under-21 squad and is the current captain."
