Bengal lynching: Rights group demands job for victim's kin

Accusing authorities of covering up the lynching and alleged bobbitisation of a man at the NRS Medical College and Hospital, a rights group here has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking its intervention.

The city-based Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) in its letter to the NHRC chairperson demanded the arrests of junior doctors and students who are alleged to have carried out the crime as well as Rs.10 lakh compensation and a job for victim Korpan Sha's family.

The body of 28-year-old Sha was recovered from the boys' hostel of NRS Hospital Nov 16. He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students.

The attackers allegedly inflicted injuries on his genitals too.

According to his family, Sha was a resident of Uluberia in neighbouring Howrah district and was mentally unstable following an accident and loss of his mother.

"So far no culprits has been identified either by the hospital and college authority or by the police," the organisation said in the letter signed by its vice-president Ranjit Sur.

"Sufficient reasons are there to believe that the state and hospital administration are trying to suppress the entire matter," it added.

Seeking the intervention of NHRC chair Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, the APDR has demanded immediate arrests of the culprits, Rs.10 lakh compensation and a job for Sha's wife, who is pregnant and has four children.

The APDR has also demanded the punishment for the principal and medical superintendent of the NRS as well as police officers for dereliction of their duties.
