Hoping to attain divinity, a youth in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Friday buried himself in a deep pit. But he was persuaded to come out, police said.

The incident happened in Panchthupi village, some 200 km from here.

Dhanai Sheikh buried himself outside his house. As soon as news of his taking 'samadhi' spread, locals assembled for a glimpse.

"The man is mentally deranged. We have been able to persuade him to come out and taken him for medical check-up," said a police officer.
