A teenage girl committed suicide on Sunday after allegedly being harassed by a local youth in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said.
"The class 10 student from North 24 Pargana's Gaighata, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling of her bedroom on Sunday morning," an officer from Gaighata police station said.
Her family said that she had previously complained of being harassed and threatened by a local guy on her way to school.
"She was scared to go out alone and go to school after being harassed. She feared that the guy won't let her off the hook easily," her mother said.
Police have arrested the local youth named Tanuj Sarkar on the basis of the complaint lodged.
"We have arrested the accused. Investigation is on to find out what compelled the girl to take such a drastic step," the officer added.
