Bengaluru court asked to expedite trial against Maudany

The Supreme Court Friday asked a Bengaluru court to conclude the trial against 2008 serial bomb blast conspiracy prime accused Abdul Nazir Maudany in four months.

The apex court bench of Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice S.A. Bobde extended the interim bail of Kerala-based People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Maudany by four months.

But the court rejected Maudany's plea to allow him to move to Kerala for his medical treatment. Besides, the court declined any relaxation in the conditions of bail.

The Karnataka government, in an affidavit, told the court that Maudany was influencing the witnesses by using his religious and political connections. The Karnataka government gave the court a list of witnesses that have turned hostile.

The court July 11 had granted Maudany interim bail while taking note that he is an under-trial prisoner who was already behind the bars for the last four years and was suffering from various ailments, including diabetes and vision-threatening ailment in both eyes.

Maudany, who was granted medical bail July 11 was arrested was Aug 17, 2010, in connection with the conspiracy for the Bengaluru bomb blast.

He had earlier undergone nine year incarceration in 1998 Coimbatore bomb blast case in which he was finally acquitted.

While granting bail to Maudany July 11, the court had asked him to furnish two sureties of Rs.One lakh each and also furnish his address where he would be staying. He was asked not to leave Bengaluru.
