Senior IAS officer Sutirtha Bhattacharya will take charge of Coal India Ltd (CIL) as chairman and managing director Jan 5, a company official said Thursday.

Bhattacharya has been relieved of his duties as the chairman and managing director of the state-run Singareni Collieries Co Ltd in Telengana with immediate effect. N. Sridhar, a 1997 batch IAS officer, is poised to take charge of the company.

The coal ministry's additional secretary, A.K. Dubey, is now the acting head of Coal India after its head, S. Narsing Rao, resigned in May 2014 to join the Telangana government.

The Public Enterprises Selection Board in November recommended the name of Bhattacharya, a 1985 batch IAS officer, to head Coal India after considering 12 contenders for the post.
